Quality
Quality is our priority! Our quality rating for the past 15 years has averaged 98.8%, and for the past 5 years: 99.25%. Quality control is part of who we are, and how we manage our business. Sons Metal Stamping is dedicated to providing our customers and coworkers with parts that conform exactly to specified requirements.
In today’s global business world of custom manufacturing, quality is no longer anticipated, it’s demanded by everyone, and we have met that challenge. Our Quality Control department coordinates with engineering and production in setting up initial inspection reports and variable data charts for all critical dimensions for every new part entered into our system. To ensure that all quality standards are met on every repeat order, our system automatically downloads these established procedures.
We use variable data charts to specify how often every operation is to be inspected once the quality department has initially approved them. Once all operations have been successfully completed, parts go through a final inspection before being shipped. All our inspection equipment is calibrated to N.I.S.T. standards, and every process and procedure is documented, including F.A.I.R.'s, PPAP's, ISIR's, SPC, CofC, capability studies, material, plating, painting, heat treat certifications, etc.
Engineering
Our engineering department's primary function is to design all tooling, and create programs for our wire electrical discharge machines, CNC machining center, laser cutter, and to coordinate measuring machines. When engineering receives parts drawings or CAD files, they are laid out and redrawn into a flat pattern with dimensions. Our KeyCreator CAD-CAM software system is used to produce layout drawings for all our tooling.
Solid part files can be accepted but are only used for tooling layouts and reference only. To send your drawing files, we require fully dimensioned prints for all part files. Accepted file types include:
Software | File Extension |
---|---|
Pro-E | .prt |
Solid Work | .sldprt |
Catia v-4 | .mod |
Unigraphic | .prt |
FastSurf | .srf |
AutoDesk Inventor | .pt |
AutoCad | .dxf |
AutoCad | .dwg |
Adobe | |
Other: | STEP, IGES, STL, TIFF, E-Drawing |
When this process has been completed, drawings are downloaded and transferred to the quality control department for approval. Once the drawings have been approved, a program for the Coordinate Measuring Machine is downloaded for inspecting the part. Upon approval of these drawings, they are transferred to the tool room and production departments.
Tooling
We own and operate state-of-the-art computer programming equipment and electrical discharge machines to design and produce all tooling on-site. We have all the necessary support equipment for building tools to exacting specifications. Every tool is made from high-grade quality tool steel that is chosen specifically for each part.
All tooling made in-house is owned by the customer for the life of the part with no maintenance fees applied. An additional tool charge may occur when there is a change to the part, but it is generally a fraction of the initial cost. Please visit our Facilities page to view a list of our tool room equipment.
Laser
We offer rapid production and accuracy with in-house laser capabilities. Our laser metal cutting machine offers short lead time with no tooling! Our Cincinnati CL-6 flying optics laser machine can assist you in getting pre-production parts or small production orders fast.
It offers rapid cutting and precision accuracy, with part accuracy to within .005 inch from a maximum sheet size of 4 by 8 feet; thickness up to .125-inch aluminum, and .250-inch steel.

Secondary Operations
We provide all types of forming operations, tapping, countersinking, reaming, drilling, and machining. Our assembly procedures include welding, brazing, silver soldering, inserting hardware (PEM, etc.), and riveting.
Outside Operations
We maintain a minimum of two sub-contractors for plating, anodizing, powder coat painting, E-coat painting, liquid painting, silk-screening, screw machine parts, heat treating, and chemical etching. Plus, we only work with organizations who have the same exacting standards as ours.
